Saying goodbye to the 4 angry squirrels
« on: August 19, 2018, 11:04:38 PM »
The 4 cylinder engine kinda rubbed me the wrong way when it let me down on the way to the anniversary ride. Then it let me down again a week or two later and then again shortly after that. The engine has been very reliable ever since but I was sick of it. Been collecting parts and planning for this LS swap ever since and this week was time to start making it happen.

Drove the jeep to work on Tues and Wed and started attacking it Thursday after work.

Everything is starting to multiply in my tiny garage.

Friday was clean up and prep.

Saturday was putting that little engine in the TJ in the background because I needed space. We don't need pictures of that...  :blah:

With the help of a friend today, the V8 is in place. There is still plenty of work to be done and I have to leave town for several days but a lot has been done in a short amount of time so hopefully I can get this thing running pretty soon.

I've already got an 8.8 in the rear. Did that fairly recently. Got it from Central GA auto salvage on 247 for really cheap.

The engine fits really well and I didn't have to change any driveshaft lengths with my generic mounts. The transfer case did go back maybe 1 - 1.5" so I could run the stock clutch fan though. With enough power from the V8, I just didn't see a need for an electric fan but that could change if it overheats at idle.

Had to do a 1" body lift in order to get a flat skid plate but should have lots of clearance now.

Only problem with a flat skid is that transmission pan looks mighty vulnerable now...may have to extend the skid a bit and figure out where to brace it since I'm not sure I can go to the frame or the front driveshaft would hit it.

The wiring is pretty messy right now but it runs, rumbles, and shifts into all gears on the freshly rebuilt transmission.
